marking verses within stanzas

vance-4
how does one place a boxed verse number within the confines of a stanza?

suppose verse one of a poem is twinkle twinkle and the second verse is little
star and they were only a single stanza in a song such as

 twinkle twinkle   little star

but you wanted to mark their verse number from the original poem so:

 1. twinkle twinkle  2. little star

where the numbers refer to the verse and should be deliniated from the text
somehow.  i think the proper way is to have them boxed.  How can i do this?

text = \lyricmode {
  \markup { \box "1." twinkle } twinkle \markup { \box "2." little } star
}
