why do you think it's non-fatal? This should halt the doc compilation.
The rest is just fallout from this. Do you have the ttf file patch for
GS (mentioned in INSTALL)?

Can you run utf-8.ly standalone?

Oh, it halts it, but if I run "make web" again, it seems to process
utf-8.ly correctly and proceeds to other files.

Yes, both creating pdf and as a png.  The Western/arabic letters look
reasonable (I don't know what they're supposed to look like), and the
Japanese looks perfect.  Standalone is just fine.

Umm... oops?  (no)

I'll go patch gs, compile it, and try again.

I've tried it with gs 8.15 with patch, and just now with gs 8.53
(according to the changelog, the patch was included in 8.52)

> Can you run utf-8.ly standalone?

The problem occurs with both markup-bidi-pango.ly and utf-8.ly ;
standalone lilypond (and lilypond --png) works with both examples.

I've got the latest fink 0.72 stuff for osx 10.3.9, with ghostscript
8.53 installed in my home directory.
./configure correctly finds gs 8.53, instead of the fink-installed 8.51.

Any ideas?

I suspect it skips utf-8.ly because the left-over files seem are assumed
to be complete, which they probably aren't.
