CVS puzzle

bobroff@centrum.is
After updating (using pserver rather than anoncvs) I've had strange
output from the console.  I even tried trashing my LilyPond src tree and
doing a fresh checkout and still I get puzzling output.

Here are the first few lines after doing ./autogen.sh:

[root@dhcppc1 lilypond]# ./autogen.sh
stepmake/aclocal.m4 is newer.  Copying file.
processing .
Running autoconf ...
configure.in:103: warning: AC_CANONICAL_HOST invoked multiple times

configure.in:103: the top level
autoconf/specific.m4:393: AC_MINGW32 is expanded from...
Warning: about to run `configure' without arguments.
arguments on the `./autogen.sh' command line
    will be passed to `configure'.

Invoke with --noconfigure to skip configure step.
Running ./configure ...

After getting this doing 'make all' would exit with a few lines of
output mentioning something about 'too many files open'.  I would have
included exactly what it had output but this time it appeared to
compile.  Then 'make install' chugged along just fine, too.

But when I did 'make web' it exited like this:

strange. I have never seen this. Maybe you have zombie processes which
hold open files?

What does
$ ulimit -n
say?  I changed mine to 4096 to avoid some problems.

Cheers,

# ulimit -n
1024

So, I guess yours is set to four times the value mine is.  Do I do:

set ulimit -n = 4096

(I'm not anywhere up to speed on system nuts and bolts.  I can do a few
things...but I have huge gaps in my knowledge)

ulimit -n 4096

This might not be the real issue, but it's worth trying.

Wow, here 'ulimit -n 512' is enough for make all.

There's a bug in texinfo 4.7 (and perhaps 4.8), wherein finished nodes
didn't close files until the whole build was done.  Since lilypond uses
a lot of nodes, we used to run into this problem on OSX.  I'm not
certain if this bug is fixed in the version of texinfo that's in fink
for 10.3.9.

I'm still not able to make web, so I'm not certain that changing ulimit
-n actually did any good for me... but it eliminates one possible
problem.  :)

Cheers,
- Graham
